age started training

hey guys, I was just wondering how old you were when you started your training, and how long it took to get through all that you wanted to.

Thedude 04-10-2007 10:00 PM

The first time 5

The second time 15

The third time 18 and went through to CFI-I-MEI

I've been flying all of my life. Both of my grandfathers and my great uncle were fighter pilots in WWII, my parents are pilots, my cousin flies C-130's in the Air Force, and I am in college with my commercial ride coming up in about a week. I've always had the opportunity to go flying. However, I was never serious about it until I was 18.

JetJocF14 04-11-2007 11:14 AM

Started with gliders around 17 and got my private at 18. Been flying ever since.

FlyerJosh 04-11-2007 03:59 PM

Started at 18, pvt by 19, comm/inst/me at 20, CFI/II by 21, first airline gig at 22.

mcartier713 04-12-2007 09:08 PM

i'm 20, working on my PPL.. but i try and fly 3 times a week at 2 hours a pop. so im hoping to get through my CFI by the time im 21.

NE_Pilot 04-13-2007 04:15 AM

Started "official" flight training at 16, took lessons once a week to once every other week, worked at the FBO every weekend to pay for the training. Took about 60 hours and about a year and a half, I got my Private at 17 (5 months before my 18th Birthday). For being in High School thats all I could do since I worked both weekends and could really only fly after school (my instructor would not allow me to miss school to go flying).

I would recommended making once a week a minimum instead of the norm. I would have done my lessons that way, but I did not make enough money to fly more.

PPL-20, IFR thru MEI-21, commuter-24, UPT-27, career(hopefully) airline-34.

pilot0327 04-17-2007 09:18 AM

PPL at 17, then instr, comm by 21 working on CFI now

shamrok 04-17-2007 10:27 AM

Private and Instrument @ 35 yrs. Commercial and CFI-I and MEI at 36 (this year). Should be FO bye summers end or early fall with the way the mins are dropping. In my case, 121 time is needed quickly because of my age so I might have to fly with a less desirable airline (not mesa). I guess I am making my career change at the right time. My goal also is not the majors, I am being realistic with age and hope to fly fractional after a 5 or 6 year stint with a regional.

A 2nd career pilot has plenty to offer the industry. With age comes experience, not just flying experience, but life experience. A lot of 22 yr. old FO's dont have squat for "life" experience. And I am not bashing the younger guys and gals, I am sure there are plenty of excellent candidates out there, just that the younger ones are without skills to deal with certain situations that experience would help with. There is the maturity factor also, just read the threads and you will see that a lot of them seem as if they were written bye a 10th grader. Just keep your goals in perspective and you will find success. And success is not measured in dollars but quality of life and how others will remember you when your good and gone!

pete2800 04-18-2007 10:52 PM

Just turned 29 two days ago & the goal was to make Captain by 30 so we'll see what happens.

planecrazyjenn 04-23-2007 09:55 PM
