IFR Currency Question...
 

I'm familiar with the requirements to maintain ifr currency; however, I heard from a colleague that after 2 years of letting your currency expire, that you are required to take the IPC with an examiner, i.e. you can't use a CFII for the IPC if you let it go more than two years. Is this correct?

I have always been under the impression that, if you don't maintain your IFR currency, after one year regardless of how many years it has been that you can take an IPC with a CFII, DE, or FSDO examiner.

You can always use a CFII for an IPC. I've never heard of what you're talking about.

That's what I thought to. I had never heard of that until this other guy mentioned it.

Never heard of that.........Don't forget your BFR though, that's really it.

Maybe he/she is confusing it with the requirements for the CFI if you don't renew.

I get into BS sessions with coworkers and students all the time about rumors and things like this. The common line from somebody will always be "show it to me in the FARs."

Thats usually the first thing I will ask when I get into a BS argument. Fortunately though this was not a typical hardheaded BS argument. The guy I was talking to brought this up in a normal conversation and admitted that he was not positive and that he had just heard this from someone else.

"14 CFR Part 61.57(d) Instrument proficiency check ...a person who does not meet the instrument experience requirements of paragraph (c) of this section within the prescribed time, or within 6 calendar months after the prescribed time, may not serve as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR until that person passes an instrument proficiency check...(2) The instrument proficiency check must be given by -- (i) an examiner; (ii)...(iii)...(iv) an authorized instructor; or..."

An authorized instructor is a CFII. A CFII may give a IPC to an non-current instrument rated pilot regardless of how long that pilot's instrument currency has lasped. There is no mimuimum number of hours of training for an IPC. All the reg requires is "...a representative number of tasks required by the instrument rating practical test."
