I couldn't fault anyone for not working for free. You would be surprised on how many instructors are willing to help out though. Not every CFI is just trying to build hours to get picked up. I have had two near me that are willing to put in some time as flight instructors and my local EAA chapter already does free ground schools every few months or as demand calls for it for those that get involved with the chapter or other aviation groups.

There seems to be a few retired professional pilots who give back to aviation in this way. I met one (had 40000tt) who didn't charge anything for ground and a low rate for flight time instruction. He said he enjoys watching the inexperienced person growing to a experienced aviator. He pushes his students to fly actual IFR, so me thinks maybe he like to watch his students grow more mature.
