If you use the search function you’ll find that the majority of the posters here will advise you to stay away from ATP unless it’s your only option due to where you live or their ability to provide financing.

Everyone has varying particulars, not necessarily any ‘right’ answer. It may depend on what’s locally available, life/family factors, and of course $$$ available.
Another important component is individual initiative, slackers end up getting passed in the slow lane.
When interested I tell prospective pilots to get the ball rolling. The very 1st step may be as simple & low cost as some type of ground school. That could be course material, classroom setting, or at least one of the free FAA downloads.
Always pay heed to peripherals, like driving records & medical.

As others have said it depends on money. For me I didn't have any cash at the time other than a few flights at the local airport with a mom and pop. I ended up going to CMSU/UCM in Missouri with a ride from financial aid. Flying wise they were about the same but the university had a much better selection of planes and instructors were always there, even at night much of the time. I also had one instructor for each rating phase so we got use to each other and it was on a set schedule. Cost wise it was about the same.
This is a common issue with student pilots that we hope to address with our flight scholarships/grants coming up. We hope to be able to fund large portions of training for those in need and have a career goal in mind. Follow us at on Twitter for updates.
