Ground Instructor
How does one become a ground instructor, advanced ground instructor, or instrument ground instructor? Is there any online program that can be used to earn them? I know it requires a knowledge test. I do not plan on becoming a CFI or CFII or MEI.

You have to take the FOI written test and then the written test for the ground instructor certificate you would like to get. Most of the people I know that have gotten the AGI or IGI have used a program like Sheppard Air to study for the exams. If you don't want to go that route there are the free FAA publications like the Instructor Handbook, PHAK, ect. Once you have both the FOI and applicable instructor written tests done, log on to IACRA and put in your application and call your local FSDO to see if they process your cert or a DPE. In my neck of the woods the FSDO is understaffed and they send these to the DPE's in the area to process. Since the DPE's are doing the processing there is a fee involved. I hope that helps.

Just to add, I particularly enjoyed the Gleim study guides because it had Q&A plus explanations. The Certificate:Ground Instructor (CGI) is available for Ratings: Basic, Advanced and Instrument. I suggest going for the Advanced and Instrument which gives you a very broad scope in ground instructing. That will require 3 knowledge exams, AGI, IGI and FOI. There is no oral or practical and I would certainly utilize an FAA FSDO because they don't charge to process the certificate.
