Plenty of online courses to take which prepare you for the written test; sportys, gleim, kingschools... If you wanted a book, The Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and The Airplane Flying Handbook is a good place to start.

Try to google a syllabus then find a video to covers that topic on youtube. Spend 4-6 hours each day. Knockout your written. Proceed to fly your heart out.

Any and every possible book/reference that you'll need for the Private. The learning never ends...

If you're planning on training at a specific school, find out which course they use. Otherwise, pick one. The FAA handbooks are great as reference and also as light reading to get you started, but the structured courses will better focus you for actual training (and written prep).

I am about to start as well. Going for CFI and hopefully ATP with enough hours

Jeppesen has the typical ground school books that also include CPL and IR prep. Really useful.

The best advice I can give to you both is to get your written out of the way before you start flying....

Gleim private pilot written test prep is all I have ever used with students. Does a good job.

I'm also about to make the plunge into this career, trying to get there before I reach my mid-thirties and long term airline prospects begin to dwindle. Likewise, I am planning on reading as many books on aviation/flight training as I can, begining with the introductory private pilot versions, at the moment I am trying to save money on videos or other more expensive avenues (ground school's).

I'm currently reading: "The Pilot's Manual: Ground School: All the aeronautical knowledge required to pass the FAA exams and operate as a Private and Commercial Pilot", just finished an older Jeppesen version a few days ago.

I plan on using this time to read as many books as I can in order to ingrain the material into my brain and then knock out as many written tests as possible in order to get those out of the way as someone suggested above.
