Concurrent PPL & Instrument Trng

Have any CFIs here done this? If so, did you build your own syllabus or did you find one of the ones online useful? Did you recommend your student do both checks simultaneously or split them up?

Absolutely no one has done this?

I don't recall anyone doing this back in the day.

If the student was definitely going right into IR, I'd emphasize instrument procedures more during XC work, etc and teach them proper scan and BAI from the get-go.

Back in the day we looked at it and I’d say NO.
You can do a lot of excercises during the Private that would be useful for the IR such as radio navigation and constant speed and constant rate of descent climbs on a radial for instance. Night XC flying Airways etc.
Combine Private and IR…..no….you’ll get a Private pilot that has never learned to look outside.

Thanks for the replies. Supposedly this only became legal with the FAA about a decade ago (plus or minus a few years). However, no one has chosen to really pursue it that I can see (on the inter webs). It would delay the PPL checkride substantially, but might accelerate the instrument rating a bit. If anyone else has any useful input, I’d appreciate it.

How would you get 50 XC PIC for the IR as a student pilot? 50 something endorsements? There’s a lot of material for PPL and IR. Focus on one at a time.

The whole enchilada would be a 141 approved PPL/IR course of training at 70hrs with 5hrs solo.
The 50hrs XC requirement applies only to a Part 61 IR.

I do the same. For cross country training, on the way back we would pick up flight following, vector by ATC, under the hood from rotation all the way to landing. So the entire 3hr cross country required training they will cover multiple stuff include portion of 61.109(a)(3)
