If you don't use it, you loose it...
I have been doing some ATP checkride prep flying with 2 guys who are captains for Trans Maldivian Airlines. They fly Twin Otter floatplanes and it's all VFR flying. They have over 5000 hrs and they are trying to get their ATP tickets so they upgrade to ATR-42's. When they got here they wouldn't have even been able to pass an instrument checkride. They had poor instrument skills and could not handle the hectic radio traffic at all.
It's just interesting to me that even high time captains can loose basic skills when they don't use them for so long.
Check out this website. Talk about beautiful flying....

According to their site, they need the ATP to be the Otter Captains, unless that's just their new mins. I completely believe it though, if it was IFR where they're going, it would just be best to stay on the ground anyways. Be a sweet job if I was single and no attachments(I'd love to fly floats, just not practical in the Midwest)
