cost of multi?
 
To have a future in aviation you also need to get your ME, and your MEI to get some ME time, right? What is the avg cost of obtaining the ME after you get the INST, COMM, CFI, and CFII?

My Comm-Multi/IFR add on was $2300 at a quickie 3-day school. It was a pretty intense three days, but you get your rating. I had to study about a week in advance on all the aircraft systems and V-speeds (they sent me a POH). So, if you come prepared with all the ground knowledge, it helps a lot during training.

You already have your commercial single?? You should have done the comm multi right after that. You can add on the multi pretty cheap...under 2K I would think.

FAR 61.63(c)

(c) Additional class rating. Any person who applies for an additional class rating to be added on a pilot certificate:
(1) Must have an endorsement in his or her logbook or training record from an authorized instructor and that endorsement must attest that the applicant has been found competent in the aeronautical knowledge areas appropriate to the pilot certificate for the aircraft class rating sought;
(2) Must have an endorsement in his or her logbook or training record from an authorized instructor, and that endorsement must attest that the applicant has been found proficient in the areas of operation appropriate to the pilot certificate for the aircraft class rating sought;
(3) Must pass the required practical test that is appropriate to the pilot certificate for the aircraft class rating sought;
(4) Need not meet the specified training time requirements prescribed by this part that apply to the pilot certificate for the aircraft class rating sought unless the person holds a lighter-than-air category rating with a balloon class rating and is seeking an airship class rating and
(5) Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, or airship rating at that pilot certificate level.

If you can get that multi now, do it. You'll have the opportunity at multi PIC earlier. I had some friends who knew they didn't want to instruct and the multi ticket was their best shot for another job.

I don't have my commercial yet. i'm working on inst. then it would be commercial? do you get the multi, and then multi commercial? or can you get multi and multi commercial at the same time? and it seems like ATP had good multi training "a la carte"

You can get your CPL in a single and then get an add-on for multi. That's probably the cheapest since twin rates are sky high. You could do your CPL in a multi, but the training is what will get you. The add-on has no specific time requirements, you just have to be proficient at instruments and engine-out procedure, Vmc, and drag demos.

oh ok, I gotcha. it makes sense to me now. but then you need to get the MEI and MEII to get some hours on multi, right?

You don't have to. You need a MEI to teach multi. You need the CFII to teach instrument. You don't have to do those, but it would be good if you're planning to build some time while instructing. It gives you more experience and helps find more students. But once you are rated for AMEL, you can log PIC in a twin (provided you are the PIC of course).
