Default How to find the magnetic heading?

How would I find the magnetic heading?

Example:

True Course is 250 degrees
Wind correction angle is -8 so it's 242 degrees
True heading is (-6 for going East) 236 degrees
Mag Heading is ?????

Thanks

Relative Bearing....but thats for using an ADF. You need to use your E6B flight computer to solve this problem.

True course (-E)(+W)VAR = Magnetic Course
Magnetic Course (-L)(+R)Wind correction angle = Magnetic Heading
Magnetic Heading (+)(-) Deviation = Compass Heading

You guys got a little off topic, they are talking about NDB/ADF work. To calculate Magnetic Heading is what you have written: TC = 250, TH = 242, MH = 236. If your looking for Magnetic Course it is TC +/- Variation. The formulas are right on the E6B if you forget.

Ok let's see if I got it:

Wind direction = 165
Wind velocity = 10
True course = 250
Wind Correction = -6

Using the E6B I got

TC(-L/+R)WCA = TH
250-6= 244

TH(-E/+W)VAR = MH
I'm flying from KTPL - KAQO so it's -6 for going to East (By looking at the sectional chart)
244-6=238

MH(+/-)DEV=CH

What's a deviation?

Deviation is read off the compass correction card that is placarded on the mag compass in your a/c.

Ex. For 090 Fly 092

Ok thank you, so MH is the heading I'm suppose to fly right?

No, Compass Heading is what you fly. You must take the MH and correct for compass deviation caused by EMFs in the airplane. To do this, follow the correction on the compass card in the airplane.

True Course is your desired ground track. Compass Heading is the heading that will cause you to fly over your True Course.

See, this is how the expression, "I've already forgotten everything you know." came about. What a completely unimportant question, in the real world. I'm so glad I don't have to retake any more exams with questions like that. Whew!

You never know bud....you could have your PFD and the 3 or 4 redundant systems all fail in your a/c one day along w/ your radios and have to manually steer your MD-80. Ok...that would never happen but you know what I mean

Default What about speed?

You're leaving out a little information. You need to know your true airspeed (a whole other topic in itself) in order to find the wind correction and work the problem.

And I agree it's important to know how to do this. 'The real world' also involves flying little Cessnas and Pipers for a lot of people, and these airplanes don't have a lot of redundancies.
