CFI/II Expired......long time ago
My CFI/II expired back in 1990, before it was easy to renew on the internet.
Does anyone know the process to get it back? From what I've found out, I may have to contact the local FSDO and see if I need to fly with an Inspector or a DE. I have been flying over the last 20 years for a living.
Thanks

Reinstate with a DPE
Hey guys,
You can reinstate your certificate with a DPE. Grab the lattest PTS for CFI or CFII. You can choose to take a ride for the CFI or CFII. One ride reinstates them both if you both on your ticket.
I would also encourage you to take an online CFI refresher course or attend one in person. This will help you get back in the swing of things. Some online courses you pay once and it good for life and others you pay every time you take the course.
Hope this helps and welcome back.

You can take the checkride for any of the instructor certs which you held previously...that one ride will re-instate ALL of your instructor certs (CFI, CFII, MEI).
For most of us the CFII would be the easiest ride...as a pro pilot you probably know all the oral answers anyway, and the flying part is pretty cut-and-dried.

- Endorsements, plus one other technical/instruction area
- Two takeoffs/landings
- Two stalls
- One performance maneuver (chandelle, lazy 8, etc.)
- One ground reference maneuver
- Emergencies (engine failure)
- Pre- and post-flight ops (obviously)
Best wishes. Zach

The verbiage for what you're trying to do is "reinstatement" checkride. It need not be a CFII nor MEI check, even if you have those. No writtens required, and and no FAA inspector required. What you need is the CFI practical test standards--that will tell you on page 1-xiii the exact tasks/areas of operation the the examiner must see. It appears to be:

I have never heard of special standards for a "reinstatement" ride???
FAR 61.199 says you can reinstate an expired instructor cert by taking the applicable checkride for any one of the ratings on that cert. You do not have to take the written, or get an endorsement, just do the checkride. Since it is not an initial CFI, it does not have to be with a fed...you can probably call any DPE you like (I would try that first...if they tell you to call the FSDO, oh well). Once that is done, you get a current cert with all of your original ratings.
Again...the CFII is the way to go for an airline guy.

What I would do is take an airplane that does NOT have an ADF. The newer models do not come with it. If an ADF is not installed or operative, you will not have do an NDB approach. I would fly with an instructor to get proficient again and take a checkride with a DPE. As everyone said on this thread, one reinstatement will make you current on all your instructor certificates.
