Approach Plate ?'s
 

When you see (IAF) that stands for Initial Approach Fix...what about when you don't see (IAF) and you see (IF)...what does that mean?! I have checked the plates front to back to see if I could find the symbol...I saw this on the straight in ILS approaches at ADDISON, TX. I have also seen both of those symbols on ADDISON GPS approaches. I am guessing it stands for Initial fix when you do straight ins but I don't want to guess. Thanks all!

"IF" stands for Intermediate Fix.

- The fix that identifies the beginning of the intermediate approach segment of an instrument approach procedure. The fix is not normally identified on the instrument approach chart as an intermediate fix (IF).

Ohhhhh yeah...but what about when you dont have an IAF...noticed it on straight in ILS approaches...it also says radar required...I guess it is just assumed you get vectored for final?

On that type of approach you must be in radar contact and getting vectors. There is no initial approach fix because you can't begin the approach on your own from a certain fix - you must be vectored in. (Also note that there is no procedure turn). Unless approach brings you into the localizer course, you can't shoot it.
