CFI written test materials
I was curious if any CFIs out there know if I will be ok using an ASA 2006 CFI written test prep book and the Gleim FOI written test prep book? I found those two on ebay for dirt cheap. I want to get the written junk out of the way before I go to Texas.

They are totally separate tests. Aside from learning better from one or the other (since the info is presented a bit differently), the test prep is essentially the same regardless of the method/publisher you use.
I'd suggest studying for the FOI first. Study on it until you pass the test, then switch to the CFI written test prep and pass that test. Don't study for both at the same time... there's no point. Once you get into the plane and start training/teaching you'll start to gain understanding of materials from both books (although the flying stuff you really should already have down).
Also when you take your CFI written, you might want to take the Advanced Ground Instructor written too. It's the same test and if you ever want to get your gold seal instructor certificate, you'll need a ground instructor certificate.

My main concern is if the ASA 2006 test prep will be the same as the 2007. I've noticed that they come out with these new test prep books every year with microscopi changes, if any at all.

I wouldn't worry too much about your test being out of date a year. There might be minor changes, but unless there's been a HUGE shake up it shouldn't make a big difference. In the end the material is all the same, even if the answers have changed slightly.
As to putting off the AGI test... don't! Do what you need to do in order to scrounge together the $80. But I guarantee that it's a lot harder to go back later and get it as opposed to taking it now. Good luck!

Try the library. I have found new up to date study books for all my test. If they dont have em there, they will usually borrow it for you from another library around the country for free. only problem is you can only keep them for about three weeks. They actually got me the dvd courses from king, jeppessen, etc and I just burned them. good luck.
