Instrument training requirements
 

I have logged about 21 hours with my instructor doing x-c under the hood and then doing approaches at airports 50nm away. At first I thought this was knocking out 2 birds with one stone, getting x-c out of the way and getting instruction at the same time. After re-reading the far's, I am questioning whether this is the best thing to do. Should I just be staying local with my instructor to practive approaches and doing the 50 x-c hours alone? And then doing the 25 hours (40 hours minus the 15 of required instruction) under the hood with a safety pilot instead of with my instructor? And one more question, is all the time logged during instrument training logged as PIC since I'm rated in the airplane? Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

I did a lot of hood work with the safety pilot and it paid off big time! I saved about $500 doing that. It might be good to knock out the x-country time and the IFR time together as it might save you money.

All of my time was logged as PIC during my IFR training, except for when we did the simulator work. If you're able to do sim work, I recommend it as that saved me an additional $500 - $600. Just curious, what state are you doing your training in?

I'm in Atlanta. At RYY. It's definitely super fun, but i'm kinda mad at myself that I didn't catch this sooner. I would have preferred to save my 15 hours of required instructor time to do nothing but approaches. I am going to do a X-c tomorrow with him, but after that i'm going to do some solo stuff. I have 2 friends that want to split some hood time with me, so that'll be great. Are you here in GA?

I was in Columbia, SC where my folks live but now I'm back in Irvine, CA helping my sweetheart deal with university housing issues! :mad: But anyway, I grew up flying at CAE where I got my PPL. Had alot of fun flying there. Have fun on your x-c!
