Engine Failure question
Hey I have a quick questions about engine failure in a multi. I have my checkride tommorrow actually and can't remember for the life of me which of the two scenarios I should do first. Obviosuly the first thing is the get the right airspeed but after assuming we have enough time to troubleshoot:
1. Mixture as required, props forward, throttles forward then troubleshoot or 2. After airspeed troubleshoot, then mixture as required, props forward, throttles foward. Any advice? Kinda having a brain fart thinking about all this stuff tommorrow starting to second guess. |
Mixtures, props, throttles all forward. Then get the gear and flaps up if they're not already, starting with the one that creates more drag. Usually that's flaps, at least in the light twins I flew.
Of course, control of the airplane is paramount over everything else. You're better off doing the right things slowly than the wrong things quickly. Once you've got it powered up and cleaned up, then decide if you want to try to troubleshoot or not, and then follow the appropriate checklist. |
FIRST THING : Fly the airplane, get the yawing under control, Mix, Prop, Throttle Forward
SECOND THING : Pitch and trim for Vyse (blue line) Then worry about grabbing flaps gear etc Depending on experience and/or SOP decide whether you are trouble shooting or picking a crash site. O...and good luck on the ride! :) |
(Aviate) fly the airplane, speed blue line, (Clean Up) mixtures, props, throttles all forward, gear up flaps up, monitor altitude and vertical speed, half ball deflection and a few degrees bank towards good engine to reduce drag, (navigate) figure out where you're gonna go, (communicate) declare an emergency

Engine failure in flight or after T/O (Below 1000'AGL). Makes a big difference on how much trouble shooting you will do.

Control--Zero sideslip, blue line
Power--Mixture, props, throttle, Drag--Flaps and gear Identify--Which engine failed? Especially important when low...don't want to feather the wrong one. Verify--Pull that throttle back Evaluate--sufficient altitude to troubleshoot? Feather immediately? Declare emergency here... Thats how I was tought... -Ben |
Well i got it done unfortunantly didnt pass first try but he came back at night and finished one thing he wanted me to redo. I forgot to forward props on stalls....stupid mistake got a second chance didnt miss em, had some other things we disagreed on such as prop movement throughout the rest so he decided to redo the engine failure under the hood for procedures. He didnt like the fact I pitched for blue line though which seemed odd to me so I didnt the second time and it went really well and i passed. I guess all in all was a good day in the end the failure really takes most of the excitment out but hey live and learn. Thanks for the help!
