Who cares about a tropical storm, that's what the INST rating is for!!! just kidding. I'm just bored and wanted to post something stupid.

One time I was working on my IFR ticket and my instructor wanted to file an instrument flight plan so we could fly around some heavy weather on a cross country lesson. He was a very sharp instructor, he now flies left seat for Expressjet and I have nothing but admiration for him... but to this day I think he may have got us into more than he meant to; there were lightning flashes going on all around us, updrafts tossed the airplane like a pizza, and approach sounded like wow I sure hope you guys are still with me. To this day I have 1) never seen that kind of weather from the inside and, 2) I am never been afraid of saying, hey, this is not very good flying weather, I for one know what heavy weather can do to a small airplane. I was a trusting student and never argued the merit of making that flight, rather I just took it that aviators are a tough breed. I was proud to be a pilot and still am.

wow cubdriver. i have heard some scary stories about flying in and around TS in light aircraft, and they are not pretty.

i dont know if any of yall read the airmets/sigmets for southeast texas yesterday, but it turned out to be PERFECT ifr weather. no TS at all, even though they were in the forcast (thats texas weather for ya). it was like OVC @ 1000 ft all damn day. i really wished we did do the check ride. but one of the reasons we waited was because the examiner also had a private checkride to do, and he was traveling in from out of town to do the rides. plus, i have begun to hand write the applicable FARs for studying. i'll need some more time to complete that anyway.

Unless you have a Wx radar, IMC in an area of possible imbedded CB is suicidal in a light airplane. Don't do it.

Note: NEXRAD doesn't update fast enough, you need a real radar.
