Failed pre-flight before lesson
Hi, all,
I was set to take my first lesson today and when I got to the school, the instructor began showing me how to preflight a plane. When we got to the rudder we noticed the left linkage was loose, and that the rudder was deflected. The instructor said the plane was not suitable to fly. The other planes were booked and my lesson was cancelled.
I was a little irked by the fact that the plane failed pre-flight. How often do planes fail the preflight checks? Is this an indication that the flight school is not up on their maintenance?
Thanks in advance, Rich.

Congratulations! You're learning the most valuable lesson in aviation for nothing except a little time well spent out of your training schedule...I'm sure more experienced guys/gals will post about the value / importance of a good pre-flight...

Congrats Rich on taking the plunge. Don't sweat it. Just like jdt30 said, planes break, especially training department airplanes. We can all give you examples of a time or two the airplane broke and we couldnt fly...the sporting times are when the airplane breaks while we are flying. That is why a preflight is so important...to catch little problems before they become big problems. Most important, have fun and learn all you can from your instructors.

As posted earlier, it is just a perfect example of why a good preflight is VERY important. Don't skip over it, or skip over parts to get in the air sooner. Imagine if you and your instructor had not done the preflight properly, and went up flying with that problem!
As far as the flight school; just keep an eye out, if it seems that these things are happening often, than you may want to think about looking for a new school.
