Building Multi Engine time
 

Any ideas how one would go about building multi engine time without spending $10,000????

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Make friends with someone who owns a twin or like most dudes, get an MEI and 25-50 hours in type then teach.

Obtain the MEI and build hours.

Or, if you have close to 1000 and low multi, apply to Airnet. They will typically hire into their SIC program until you hit 1200, and 135 mins.

Without being an MEI I can't think of any. Would also like to know of a better way to build multi time. Has anyone flown with APPP to build multi time? Looking to buy 100hr block this spring and don't know much about the company nor can I find any reviews.

I was contacted by APPP, but they are located on the other side of the country for me.

There are other avenues, try Airnet, Scenic, Piedmont, AMF...there are alot of companies that will hire with low (or very little) multi.

In terms of timebuilding, you DON'T have to spend $10,000. All you really need at this point is about 30-50, and perhaps the MEI. I'm thinking of doing some of that at Skymates next month.

Hop in the right seat of a King Air or turboprop that is required to have a 2nd pilot per insurance.

Try King Airelines in LAS, they were hiring last time I checked.

I was concerned about the very same thing, and focused all my efforts on building multi in any way possible. I was fortunate and many opportunities came my way. Before I list these opportunities, I would strongly suggest obtaining your MEI before you buy a block of 100 hours of time. If you're going to be spending that much money, you might as well get another rating to show for it, and in today's market, even the more scarce MEI job is probably easier to find than it used to be.

My multi was built by:
Multi rating-10 hours
MEI rating-5 hours
Corporate flying program at my flight school-30 hours (turbine)
Weather modification-50 hours
Corporate flying internship-150 hours (turbine)

Again, I was pretty lucky, and the biggest opportunities were possible due to connections made through my 141 flight school...but you can see that you might have to do all sorts of off the wall things in order to get that first 100 multi. In the end, it's worth it for the varied experience, and money saved. I didn't do any multi instruction, but wish I would have had the chance...I think it'd be a great way to build experience.

I really would like to get the MEI, especially as part of a 50 hour block being purchased.
