I agree. I was ready to sign up myself until my CFI informed me.

Default Why ERAU?

Ubermich:

You paid 70k to graduate from Riddle? Man, that seems so illogical to me. I graduated fall '87. Tuition, then was based on the "block system." In other words, i could take 12-18 crdt hrs for $1825.00. Riddle cost me less than 20K for a BS in Air Studies and I was on the 15day meal plan and I stayed in University Housing.

You are right in advising others to save the money, go to a public univ. and learn to fly at a local FBO.

P.S.-I can remember when the National Airlines B-747 that's in the bookstore hung over a pool table in the UC; happy hour on friday's and when you had to cross a wooden bridge (now concrete) going from the dorms (by the pool) toward the UC. Can anybody else out there remember those things?

Pretty much anyone from anywhere who thinks the world owes them something it doesn't will set me off. Sorry if it sounded personal.

PS One of the best pieces of advice I've gotten in aviation came from a guy when I was flying back in California. He said California, Arizona and Florida are great places to learn to fly but once you get your private, get the hell out of here and learn something. I've said it myself several times: QUANTITY of hours is irrelevant. Its what you did during those hours that counts. And airlines are starting to recognize that.
Ok then right on. But ill leave the pantyhose off. It's just a peeve of mine every winter every day all I hear about how isnt it supposed to be warmer here?

Yeah quality is much better than quantity.

Now lets go get a beer or something!

PS you can make fun of my grammer and spelling I'll tell you Im bad at them but thats because I did not go to a school where english was the primary language.

As a recent grad, I'll throw in my two cents. ERAU is a much more diversified school than many people are making it out to be. It is not simply a pilot mill; a great deal of cutting edge aeronautical and astronautical research takes place there, its faculty has serious street cred, it has a thriving graduate school, and has made an undeniable stamp on aviation since the 20's - like it or not. Is it a ripoff? In some ways, yes, but its all about what you make of it. Riddle is a private school. Private schools are expensive. But in comparison to other private institutions it is affordable, and the education is excellent. I would not reccomend flying on campus - it is overpriced, inconsistent, and will leave you frustrated. Excellent flight training can be had off-campus much more affordably.

Are Riddle students pricks? Yes, alot of them are, but alot of them are also very humble, intelligent, and dedicated students. The student body is an interesting mix, and you'll find discussions on campus similar to the discussions taking place in this thread. There are alot of trust-fund babies there, and they're the ones who are a pain in the ass, always talking about the brand new Cirrus that their dad bought them, etc. But just because some of the students think that their shi%! doesn't stink doesn't mean that the school isn't a fine institution. Alot of Harvard students are pricks, but nobody questions Harvard's postition as an intellectual heavyweight.

To those who say that you can't do anything with an aviation degree, they must be convinced that the only thing that one can do in the aviation industry is fly. It's no different than saying "why would you get a computer science degree? All you'll be able to do is work with computers." I have an "aviation degree" and was made many a lucrative offer from comapanies with their hands in the industry. If people can't find work with an aviation degree it is only because they pidgeonhole themselves.

Embry-Riddle isn't a flight school, it's a university, and should be regarded as such. You can go to any mom and pop's FBO and get your ratings - but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a place with as much to offer as ERAU in terms of aerospace education. I've got student loans out the ass, but I can't complain - I have a great job and recieved a great education, that's all I asked for.

Hey-Did you graduate from UND already or do you still go there?

Didn't Riddle have a problem with Mid-airs several years ago, because they allowed their "pilots" to fly some non-standard traffic pattern or something of that nature? I could be wrong about that, but I thought I heard something about it back in the day.

At the Prescott campus about a year ago two of our teachers (ex fighter guys) were doing some acrobatic stuff and had a mid air. No students were involved. This is the only one I know of at either campus.

Sounds good. I just threw the thing in there about the spelling and grammar because some of the old farts from the other forums who hate life like to come in here and flame the younger guys because they forgot a comma or an apostrophe some where.

Come on up here (it's a balmy -20C right now) and I'll teach you all about engine covers and how to land on an icy runway and then we'll have that beer! Fly safe!
