Aviation degree VS. non aviation
 

Okay, so I'm on my senior year for an aviation degree, and I'm finding/wishing that I had a non aviation major. So... I'm thinking about going back (or continuing school?) to get another degree. IF not, then maybe a minor in business or something. Thoughts?

If its going to make you take longer to finish school...its not worth it. An Aviation degree is still good enough to get an entry-level job in a variety of industries...turning that into a successful non-aviation career has everything to do with your personality and nothing to do with what your degree is. Remember, a bachelor's degree is there to get you your FIRST real job...that's it. All future jobs will weigh your work experience more heavily than your degree.

If you want to do business, you can get an MBA even if you didn't major in Business as an undergrad.

I was in the same boat. Got to my junior year of an aviation degree before I realized that I should have majored in something else. But at that point I decided I wasn't interested in prolonging the college experience (meaning I couldn't afford another 2 years to finish a comparable degree) so I just sucked it up and graduated with the aviation degree. If I HAD decided to stay for another degree, it would have been a business degree. An "aviation management" degree is probably the best compromise since a management degree can be applied to just about any field.

I did my master's on the internet while working at a regional. Don't waste your time and money now.

I don't think it matters at all. Major in what you enjoy. Both of my brothers majored in political science and one works on computers and the other is in logistics. A degree is a degree. If you enjoy aviation, major in it. You will not be limited to an aviation career with your diploma, I'm sure.

I got off the phone with a good adviser at our college and he suggested to finished up my degree and get a masters (he did the same thing and didn't say it cost him a TON). If I switched degrees, it take me like 30 more units, and I don't feel like spending that much more to get an administration degree instead of a professional pilot. So... goin for the masters.

Yeah, good luck with that. Two more years of School. Let me know how that goes for ya.:confused:

haha... seriously. 18 years of school. I thought I would be done after college... but I think a backup of an MBA would be smart in case (God forbid) I loose my medical, another 9/11, and/or a big downturn in an the industry... I'm tired of school, but it could be worth it.

You could always start flying and work on the masters then. It wouldn't be too hard to do it part time. Might take a little longer but that way you're not putting your career on hold for what might be a "back up plan."
