Advice on becoming a career pilot
#11
If you have a buddy who works for the company you want to work for, try to hang out as much as possible. Ask questions, sit around and and B.S. with the guys about flying and almost more importantly things other than flying as much as possible. Let them get to know the you outside aviation. In corporate flying there are days you spend a lot of time sitting around an FBO or a hotel. If you get to know the pilots well, next thing you know there is an invitation to a ferry/test flight, and another and maybe a turn at the wheel during one of those flights and hopefully a job offer down the line.
Most importantly, don't let the state of the business bog you down. You will read a lot of ugly posts from a lot of people on these message boards and others about the flying business these days. Just realize that a lot of what they say is frustration with how things have changed mostly for the worst in the last 6 months. At heart, most of the people in the business still love to fly airplanes. Keep plugging along and you will be ready to jump at the first wave of hirings in the next couple years.
