You need college but major in something you enjoy outside of aviation. You need a four year degree to effectively compete for the best jobs. I would suggest you check out the home page at Jetcareers.com - Welcome

Get a 4 year degree in something anything but aviation. This will give you a solid back up plan. If you can start flying now and get your PPL to make shore it is something that you actually want too do. Most of all for the love of God don't get in trouble. With the airlines becoming more competitive any little thing might make you not look as desirable as someone else. However don't let anyone discourage you from flying. I love the job and there is only one other job I would trade it for and I am doing it too. I also don't fly 121 (for the airlines.) I fly 91/135. The industry is in a down fall right now but there will always be a need for pilots. Just take all advise with a gran of salt and you should be fine.

I'm no expert.... but if I were in your position I would do whatever I could to get a private at a local FBO with somewhat decent airplanes and a good instructor. As far as education goes.... I would go to a public university or private school (with scholarships) and major in whatever else you like besides aviation. If you are paying for everything yourself, try joining Civil Air Patrol... often times that opens the doors for some scholarships or if you are interested in the military getting an ROTC scholarship and going on the long road of becoming a military aviator, etc.
Just try to get the private behind you as soon as possible, keep your nose clean, meet people in the industry, and don't let anything stop you from doing what you really want to do, including finances.

I doubt you'll hear anyone that has experience in the industry support a degree in aviation. On the other side if you talk to a recently graduated or still in school student you'll be more likely to get a different response. "Hind site is always 20/20".
Multiple sources of reliable income is key in this "new" society. And aviation has some guaranteed downfalls when it comes to job security , so you NEED to be marketable in areas other than aviation. Don't just rely on your aviation job. Use that other training so that you can stay proficient just incase. And if nothing happens at least you will have some extra cash which is always needed.
