That's the beauty of the ANG...any other military pilot job requires you to sign up, incur a comittment, and attend training BEFORE you find out what type of aircraft you will fly. With the ANG, you join a unit that flies a particular aircraft type, and go to AF flight school already guaranteed that aircraft. If you wash out you may or may not incur a small comittment as a ground-pounder, but I doubt it.

I'm gonna look pretty seriously into doing this. I'll talk to a couple freinds here who are in the guard (not pilots) and go pay the recruiter a visit. I'm years out from any regional, but I guess it won't hurt to poke around. What I meant was, if I were not to get a pilot slot, would it be worth it join anyways (say aircraft mechanic, ATC-if they even handle that, or something along those lines)?

^ WARNING ^

Anything a recruiter tells you should be double checked through back channels or internet research.

Recruiters are unfortunately known for promising whatever the person wants to hear.

You've been warned.

Recruiters

Believe everything F15 says. You can't trust them. I got screwed by the recruiter. Talk to people who have been there and don't let them talk you into anything you don't want to do.

Unless its in writing you won't get it...I went to the recruiter with the job in mind already (AF job 3C2 - communications / networking technician) and had it guaranteed in writing on the contract...They will try to pressure you into what ever field the military needs to build up at the time...

The guard/reserves are a useful source of life experience, educational benefits and supplemental income.

The part-aspect of the guard/reserves works well with most aviation jobs, especially airlines, due to schedule flexibility.

However, if you can get ANY fixed wing military pilot slot, that is the fastest track to success in the airline business, period.

Helos in the guard/reserve would be good also, because you still get the military trained ticket punched, and you can advance your civilian fixed-wing career while serving part-time. Active duty helos would suck cuz you're stuck for 10 years with no good way to advance your fixed-wing career.
