CFI Only durring the summer

Alright, CFI training is going great, and I will have my certificate before this summer.

I have started sending Resume's through email to FBO's not to far (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho). I just simply gave them the dates I will be available to work, and attached my Resume.

How should a new CFI approach the job hunting to get a SUMMER ONLY CFI job?

I understand the drawbacks are that I would not finish a student's training before I had to return for school.

The benifits for the FBO would be that I am a brand new CFI (not going to be leaving for the airlines soon), and that they can show me how they do things without having to change how I am used to doing things. Also I would return the following summer, and to work full-time after graduation.

Any input would be greately appreciated!

I don't know much about the CFI ballgame, but just curious (being a native of the great northwest myself) where did/are you doing your flight training and where are you going to school? Good luck on the summer job search.

mistarose,

Are there any flight schools near your university that would allow you to keep your students, even if you go back to school full time? It really isn't the greatest thing leaving your students hanging. (thank god this hasn't happend to me...but) I have friends who are working on their Pvt Pilot and have been through 4 or 5 instructors. All they do is complain!

Suggestions:
1.) Take a few classes this Summer, and flight instruct on the side. Then continue teaching throughout the semester - taking one/two class(s) less because you took it over the summer!?

2.) Work on your CFII or Multi-Engine (and then your MEI) Get that all out of the way.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you, I am doing all my flight training at Central Washington University, I am a sophomore, but quite ahead on the flying. I'll be getting my CFII and Multi Junior year during school.

There is only two FBO's within close proximity, the one where I train at, where they will not hire me since they take this schools graduates and don't need any more CFI's, the FBO in Yakima south of here is my best option, of course I will apply there, and could even drive down and work part time durring school like you said - great idea.

Whats the best way to approach an FBO for such a job? I will write a cover letter, and attach my resume, should I call and talk to the Chief flight instructor, arrange a meeting with him or what?

I'd just walk in, probably late afternoon when folks have the time and mood to chat. Bring your resume, certs, logbook, and have your flight gear in your car. Wear slacks, button down and tie. Find out who the CP is so you know who to ask for. You could call in advance, but you might just get told "no thanks" over the phone. Even if he tells you no in person, he might remember you next month when 5 of his CFI's get the same class date (next Tuesday) at skywest
