Opportunities in Utah?
Hey all, I'm a CFI w/ SEL. I live and work in Utah in the Davis County/Salt Lake County areas. I'm coming up on 600 hours w/ 300 instruction given (part 141). Due to the weak economy and bad interest rates right now my students are unable to fly which spells out the same thing to me... only my not flying also calls for me not getting a paycheck. Anybody in this area know of any job opportunities doing anything in any plane?
Also, I had the chance to fly a Citation 2 a few weeks ago... quite honestly it was a motivator for me to get my butt in gear and get away from the instruction world so I can worry about my own slip ups rather than my students'. Is this familiar to anyone else?

Hey Jared,
I spent 4 years as a cfi in utah out of skypark before i moved on. i understand how frustrating that can be. IMO you and everyone else should still be held to the 1000/100 mins for an airline job and i just am blown away when i see people with 600 hrs whinning because they are ready to "move on". Pay your dues buddy, I had 700 hrs of instruction before I qualified for an airline and I WAS LUCKY it was that low. Anyway....
Sadly, Utah is a slow aviation state especially as we move in to the winter months. With 600 hrs there really isnt much you can do but i would hit up the places anyway...
Ogden and Tooele, as im sure you know, have jump operations, you might look into some work for them.
If you want to move a little Moab is always looking for pilots although you may have to meet some 135 times.
During the winter there is always fog seeding, they should be starting to look for pilots here in the next few weeks, go talk to the people at the SLC GA FBO.
I have noticed this year for the first time banner towing in utah, i dont know who does it but you might want to check them out.
Also there is the morning traffic flights however, after all these years i still dont think they pay and I would never go there because of it but everyone has their own choices to make.
If your just interested in time Ameriflight does FO interships in their BE99s but you will pay a good deal for that.
Other then that all i could suggest is take anouther part-time to pay the bills and offer to go on flights with people just to build time. Play all your angles, but keep in mind the chips are down right now in the industry. Almost every airline is furloughing and no one is hiring. With thousands of pilots on the streets corporate jobs will be hard to find.
Stay ontop of things because it changes fast, in two months time we might have another pilot shortage and you could get lucky enough to fly for some regional somewhere with 600 hrs.

Oh nice, Skypark is where I did all of my training. Thanks for the info though. I guess that it's not really flight instructing itself that I don't like, it's the inconsistent paychecks that we all know about. I know I'm lucky to be where I'm at for sure especially at my age, but you said it, flight instructing gets real slow this time of year.
