This is solid advice. It should be no secret what it "approximately" takes to keep the airplane on the GS/LOC at a given groundspeed. By the time you're a mile out (from your stated scenario), you should have your heading bracketed to hold the localizer. One simple rule to determine your V/S required to hold the glide slope is Groundspeed+0/2... for example, 100 kts groundspeed approach would be 1000/fpm divided by 2 = 500 fpm (approximate).

Also remember pilots are creatures of habit. Whatever methods you learn, do them the same way every approach and you'll have approaches licked in no time.
