ILS question
Ok, so quick question, if proceeding outbound on an ILS, do I set the VOR receiver to the outbound course so that I dont have reverse sensing? I know that for an HSI I keep the inbound course set because there is no reverse sensing except on ILS backcours. thanks.

An ILS does not operate on the same principle as a VOR/VORTAC. It simply emits two signals; one at 90 hz and the other at 150 hz. The only way you can recieve reverse sensing is if you are tracking the localizer outbound or doing a backcourse approach. Additionally, I doesn't matter what you have the OBS tuned to, it is just set to remind you or your intended course.

NO! NO! NO! NO!
The ONLY time you get reverse sensing is when you are flying the reciprocal course of the LOC, ie backcourse INBOUND.
Let's say you do an ILS and do a missed that involves tracking the backcourse OUTBOUND...normal sensing occurs when flying the front course, over the missed approach point, and outbound on the backcourse. It gets real sensitive over the antenna (located at the DEPARTURE end) but it remains normal sensing the whole time.
Do the exact same scenario on the LOC BC approach and you will have reverse sensing the ENTIRE time.
ANYTIME you are flying in the "correct" direction on the LOC you get normal sensing regardless of your location. Anytime you you fly the BC direction you will get reverse sensing regardless of location.
NO CHANGE in sensing occurs as you overfly the runway unless you do a 180.

90hz, or 150hz, It does not matter what you have dialed in... If you are left or right, i will show on your HSI.
