Atp Written Requirements
 

I was wondering if someone could possibly help me figure this whole thing out. How old do you have to be to take an ATP written test? I was told over 18 and then I called all ATP's to take there 295 dollar test prep and test day course and they said 21 years old. I am 20 I would like to take my test, but I cannot figure out who will let me take it and even if I am eligible to take my ATP written at 20. I need it for work and have been told two stories can someone please help me find out the truth in all of this.

I don't have the FARs handy, but someone may be thinking that because it expires after 2 years and you can't get an ATP until age 23, there's no point in taking it before age 21. Of course you can use an expired ATP written at a 121 carrier. I'd look at FAR 61.

Ok im employed by a 121 carrier but ATP's wouldn't let me attend the ATP written course due to my age . There rep on the phone said you must be 21 so Im all confused about that.

Christ, who do you fly for at 20 years young? I thought all regionals required you to be at least 21, obviously not though.

We require you to be 21 years of age. What is the big difference waiting a year because you cannot get your ATP until you are 23 anyway. An expired ATP written is only good if you took it while you were with that carrier and upgraded with that carrier years later. Why do you need it so bad at that young of an age? If you took your ATP written now, and in 2 years when it expires, switched companies, you would have to take it again before you took your ATP practical.

If you absolutely have to have it for work or you won't have a job, buy the Gleim software prep. It will allow you to practice the test in the computer scenario for about $200 less than the 1 day course at ATPs. Of course you won't have the help of limiting the test bank that you get at ATPs, but you shouldn't need it. Good luck to you, but if you take it before you're 21, you're stuck where you are working now since it will expire before you're 23.

FAR 121 says that an expired ATP writen is valid at a 121 carrier. It does not say that you had to take the written while employed at that particular carrier. Usually applicants take the written prior to interviewing, and then use it to upgrade later on.

If you take a written, let it expire, and change companies, it is no longer valid. That is what every person who has come here has said, and we have done about 75 since I started. No it doesn't have to be the same carrier, but you must be employed by a 121 carrier without any gaps in your employment. If you quit the company, and don't get hired until sometime later, than your written is no longer valid.

I am going to stay with my current company. I don't absolutely need it but I am ready for it and I wanted to take it while the information is fresh and I feel that I can score high on it at this point in time. I plan to stay right where I am as far as work the CRJ is nice bird. But i figured that if I took it now come upgrade time it would be one less thing to have to worrie with. Please let me know if I am indeed eligible.

I know that CATS won't let you take the written if you aren't 21, not just ATP.
