61.56(d) A person who has, within the period specified in paragraph (c) of this section, passed a pilot proficiency check conducted by an examiner, an approved pilot check airman, or a U.S. Armed Force, for a pilot certificate, rating, or operating privilege need not accomplish the flight review required by this section.

All you have to do is be able to produce a record showing that you completed the check.

Now if the story involved Navy pilots - well what do you expect?
I haven't flown civilian in nearly 18 years except for my ATP and I'll not be flying even the mighty C-152 without a CFI for the first time or two!

The tactical guys have trouble in GA airplanes because they run out of energy way faster than expected.
