I can not tell you how many pilots that I have flown with from various schools that can not fly themselves out of a paper bag. At least not to our standards. Sad really. Not to mention alot of experience (obviously they need two years for a signoff).

celticpilot is absolutely right. New CFI's know nothing and the CFI training is only preparing you for the check ride. Nothing can replace actual instructing experience.

As far as choosing a school: Go someplace that is reasonably close to where you live (why pay moving expenses) and start interviewing instructors. If a school/FBO will not let you choose the instructor with the best CFI Initial pass rate then take your business elsewhere. Avoid schools with gimmicks such as fixed pricing. You should not need to fly very much (depending on your ambient skill) but you will definitely need hours and hours of ground.
