I am a 19 year old from England currently in my second year of university studying for a Bachelor of Science degree with QTS (qualified teacher status). Although I really do enjoy teaching and would not mind it as a career my dream is to become a pilot. I never really thought of a career in aviation before as my parents were both teachers and it seemed the logical process for me to become a teacher.

I have had one trial flying lesson so far and I am really keen to begin attempting to gain my PPL. I understand that realistically I will not be able to afford lessons until I have qualified as a teacher and have a job. I am currently looking round local flying schools and there seems to be a wide range of prices for lessons.

Any answers to my questions or any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

What sort of price should I be paying for a lesson?
Is it a realistic career?
Any advice at all on how I should go about achieving my goal to one day become a commercial pilot.

Are you currently living in England? If so it might be difficult for anyone here to provide you with that information. Things are very different over there. I was told years ago that things are so tight in the UK that you had to be a RAF superstar to pilot a Cessna 310 for pay. Recently however I saw an article of a 25 year old guy who was a A320 captain in England so I couldn't tell you what the odds are.

Try contacting these guys, they specialize in European flight training. They do some of their training in California, which is why I know about them.
