The commitment is now 10 years after you complete pilot training. You will be an indentured servant for approx 11 years of your life. I must say that life in the Guard/Reserve is much better quality than being active duty.

If you want more info on which units are hiring google Air National Guard or Air Force Reserves. Go to the official web site and click till you find "employment opportunities"

- Hope this helps!

I'm sure SkyBusDriver knows about this because he advised the military route and your local AF recruiting office will tell you this. Most of the pilot positions are filled by the big military academies. ROTC and the officer training school guys get the very few left over pilot slots. Very probable that you will be assigend an office job before you get a pilot position.

If I was you I would get the Private Pilot certificate first and see if you really like flying. After that continue at a LOCAL flight school not a big academy. You spend WAY less at an FBO, just do the math. But make sure that you don't go for the cheapest school in your area. I went to the cheapest one in my area because I though saving money was more important. Result? Flying with half broken planes. As soon as I got my PPL I left for a "safer" more expensive school.

Hmm......so I should get PPL first, but I have very limited budget (most likely around 10k), I'm not sure if I'll have money to get commercial pilot certificate after PPL, what should I do?

You could get a private and maybe an instrument rating for about $10K, depending on location and school. If you decide you like to fly enough to do it full-time, loans are available if you have a credit history, job, and/or family who will co-sign.
