Flight Training in N. Virginia/D.C. area
I am contemplating a move to the D.C. area. I have lived in Florida my whole life, and I have done all of my flight training here. I'm a bit spoiled because we have such nice flying weather here the entire year. Continuing with my flight training is very important to me, and I'm concerned that I will not be able to do as much flight training up in the D.C. area as I am able to do down here. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Also, any recommendations for flight schools would be appreciated as well.

Dealing with the SFRA is a bit of a pain. You may want to look for schools outside of it. Leesburg, VA (JYO) seems to have a decent flight school though I don't have first hand experience with it. Its right on the edge of the SFRA and has special procedures for entry/exit so you don't have to file a flight plan.
The weather will have its ups and downs. If you're working on an instrument rating you're likely to have more opportunities for some actual up here. |
Thanks. I would definitely welcome the opportunity to get some more actual instrument experience since it is hard to come by down here. But I guess icing would be a concern up in that area as well. I have not experienced that down here....

You should go to Dulles Aviation at Manassas Airport. We offer everything from Private to ATP. The website is www.dullesaviation.com .
The SFRA isn't as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be, so don't let that discourage you. |
It looks like Manassas Airport and Leesburg Airport are the same distance from D.C. (about 40 miles). Is there anything closer?
