Multi IFR/CPL training
 

Hi everyone, I've been browsing these forums for a couple weeks now and finally caved in and registered :rolleyes:.

I am turning 19 next month, living in Canada; finished my PPL last month and now have about 70 hours total time. I'm doing the college+flight training on weekends type of route to get my ratings.

Now to the point; by the time I'm finished with my schooling, I want to have my multi IFR ratings and of course, the CPL. Now my question is, should I go ahead and do the multi IFR now (because the hours count towards the CPL) or should I get the CPL done first and then do the multi IFR? Or is there some kind of requirement that says I need to do one before the other? I wish I had more perspective on this but all my flying friends are more or less in the same spot as me at the moment.

Not positive about canadian licenses but heres how it works in the states.

You can get your multi before your commercial but you will have to take more checkrides and will probably be more expensive. If you add your multi onto your private it does not move to your commercial when you get it (like an instrument rating) regardless of if your a multi rated private pilot you must do a commercial single engine ride and multi engine ride. if you dont mind doing an extra checkride id go for it. never can have to much twin time!

What I did is I got my Private ASEL and Instrument before I went off the college. In college i went and did my Commercial ASEL and just got my Commercial AMEL with an Instrument Rating. I got about 20 hours of multi time with the Commercial add on but if you want you could go get your Multi add on to your private and train for your instrument and commercial in the multi. This way is alot more money, but you get more multi time which is really what counts.

I got my multi first and then built time towards the commercial in a multi with a safety pilot. We found a cheap twin and when we split the cost it worked out the same as renting a single.

Yes there was one more check ride involved but when I got my MEI I had 145 hours of multi time, the school that hired me put me as their lead multi-instructor because of my experience and I left them with 1200 hours 765 of that in multi-engine AC.
