Freelance Instructing

First, I want to thank everyone here for helping me out with my decisions in the aviation. Finally, I have came across a hard decision to move on with my CFI License..... since i could not find any job I decided to do a Freelance Flight Instruction.

I am not sure how this is going to work, and its my last option before applying for line jobs and flight service jobs across the nation, and i need one quick help from you all again.

1) I would like to know, what are the rules and regulation i must follow as a Freelance Flight Instructor and Do I have to register my self with FAA to become a freelance Instructor.

2) Am I allowed to post Freelance Instruction Offering Post here in this forum?

Regards,

1) There are no special rules to free lance, just get your CFI, and you are blessed by the FAA.

2) No, this site doesn't allow advertising at the forums.

You just follow all of the part 61 and 91 FARs that you learned about in training...of course that is easier said than done.

I would buy or acquire a lesson-plan system to allow you to organize and track student training programs for the various ratings. "Ready to fly? What do you want to work on today?" is a pretty ineffective approach...

Hopefully you know or can meet a senior CFI who can answer questions... unless you're really good with reading and interpreting regs and ACs you will need some help to avoid paperwork snafus.

The FAA-related part of this answer is the easy part. As others have already said, you do not have to register with the FAA. You have a CFI certificate and that's all you need. The rules and regs are the same that you have to follow as a CFI whether you are freelance or not.

But, there are non-FAA matters to consider. The foremost among them is to recognize that as a freelance CFI you are operating a business. The FAA doesn't care but there may be a whole bunch of non-FAA rules, regulations and other stuff you have to follow.

Does your state have business registration laws? Are you going to use a catchy name other than your own and, if so, do you need to register it? Are there any advantages to setting up a separate company? Are there minimum standards at the airports where you plan to teach that apply even to freelancers? What do you plan to do, if anything, about insurance?

Most of this stuff might not even be a big deal. But it does need to be considered.

Why would you want to?

Which brings up a another non-FAA consideration - what's your plan for marketing your services? Who is your target and how to you get to them? You might consider looking for a book called "The Savvy Flight Instructor." It's been around for a long time but has advice that's still pretty good.

Thanks for bringing my brain back to working mode. i'm in State of Florida and believe that I have to register my self with Sunbiz, I think its a good idea to do so because I do have a catchy name :)

I will check on the book with local bookstore....

Thanks again

I know a few CFIs operating as LLCs in Florida but they also own their own airplanes. Look into CFI insurance before you start, especially if you will be renting an airplane from an FBO. I suggest that you can join NAFI and list your info on their instructors page, you'll be surprised how many people will call you.

How many hours of dual given do you have? If you are an experienced CFI and are looking for a part time CFI job, PM me.

dont forget to register with TSA, you will have to keep records regarding your students and give each a logbook endorsement verifying they are US citizens

You do need to complete the security training online, but the logbook endorsement for students is not required as long as you keep copies of their passport/birth cert.
