I'm working on my M.S. in Aeronautical Science through ERAU Worldwide (online) and got their e-mail a few weeks ago.

Here's the crazy part...
  • Tuition cost -$980 per credit hour
  • Books (est.) -$300 per 3-credit course
  • Residency- $1200 per residency in addition to tuition
But... to anyone that can afford it, good luck!
Aviation Ph.D. Program Description Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

I think it makes sense actually. If your goal is to be a professor teaching aviation, then you should probably shoot to go as high as possible. If so many people are going to continue to endorse aviation in an academic setting, then the credentials need to rise to that same level.

So depending on your professional goals, it makes sense.

A Phd to teach aviation??? Seriously? A Masters is overkill, real world experience trumps any educational degree IMO when it comes to aviation.

That's just my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

ERAU's MAS doesn't require a thesis either.

I agree. The professor teaching our Master's level Air Carrier Operations class had a M.S. in Aeronautical Science and 20+ years airline experience as a captain.

I hear ya Ewfflyer. :D

But you know, I can kinda understand why some would pursue this degree. The world of higher education and academia has a culture of its own; especially those at the Ph D level. I've been exposed to that culture most of my life and can kinda indentify with the reasons as to why one would pursue the degree. Personally I wouldn't; however, my Dad and my oldest sister have Ph D's in both Mathematics and Cirriculum & Instruction from Michigan State and Howard University respectively.

I've sat in on some interesting conversations at the breakfast and dinner table over the years.

I wish I could get a PhD in drinking or blowing stuff up. Now that would be awesome.

Actually, I went to school with some mining engineers that were working on their masters degree, which involved blowing stuff up. They had an explosives lab with some pretty hardcore explosives in there. Pretty cool!
