It's rather boring, but it gets the job done. Easily accomplished in a few days with just a few hours each day.

Well, I've done the American Flyers online renewal at least three times prior and to the best of my recollection, you couldn't access the quiz until you'd been logged in for a predetermined time (which varied by section). This time, I logged in, clicked through the seven pages of info in Section One and took the exam.

Insofar as taking the 8710/completion certificate to the FSDO in person, this time I opted for the $25 online submission. I'd rather pay the $25 than kill half a day.

Well, you go ahead and say what you want. These courses still mandate 16 hours of "study and test" time no matter what you think. How long you been instructing? Things don't get easier all the time, they get more involved if anything. BTW, I have been instructing for 39 years.

Regardless, it seems you no longer have to remain logged in for X number of minutes prior to the stage quizzes becoming available.

Just did mine. All you have to do is click through the slides and take the test. Took about 2 hours. That was mostly filling out the IACRA

Does anybody here really take their job seriously? I mean, do you even bother to try to possibly learn something new, or be aware of any important changes? This is what has always been wrong with aviation. Cram the info, and get the tests out of the way whether you have learned anything useful or not. I'm sorry, but you do a disservice to your students and yourself by not trying to be the best you can be. I have seen too many of the "gifts to aviation" come and go due to their arrogance and disrespect. I guess maybe I have been doing this too long, but, I still take a deep and profound interest in teaching my students everything they need to know to be a safe and professional pilot, whether it's PPl or ATP. Too many people with SJS.

I'm not really sure what you're so bent out of shape about. I asked a simple question; whether or not American Flyers has changed their requirement to be logged in for a predetermined number of minutes prior to having access to the section quizzes.

I haven't signed anyone's logbook for the better part of 20 years.

Yeah, I did the FIRC too. No time requirement like years past..... I imagine some sort of FAA dispensation may have been granted that warranted the change. That, & maybe the fact that being logged on was not "proof" enough since boatloads of people, myself included, we're completing the modules early & then walking away doing other chores.

I understand all that. I guess I am just curious why this can be done. I just recently completed the AOPA course. When I finished the mandatory stuff, they informed me that I had to take these other "elective" courses. I e-mailed them to ask why, and they responded that I did not put in enough time according to FAA rules about the time requirement. If you go to one of the ground renewal courses, you are required to spend 16 hours there, so, what's up with that? I understand that almost everyone wants to do the airline thing, been there, done that myself. I guess I just get miffed when I see 200-300 hour "wonders", after flight instructing for a year or two, seem to have, or think they have all the answers. Rant over, I'm done.
