i think that if you can afford to dump the cash...get everything up to MEI at a school like American Flyers. I know some people that went there and got an offer when they finished. if you don't want to stay with the school that brought you up, you might have luck. walk into places. AZ, FL, and i think MI is good somewhat for aviation. Louisville, KY (where im currently at) is flooded with instructors.
When looking for a CFI position, i would take the following into consideration:
Look for a place you would be willing to stay with. You will probably meet you future boss and when you are checking out the school see how they treat their employees. You deserve a positive work environment, which will allow you flexibility and allows you to meet your goals. (i.e. 135 mins and multi) also...try and stop at local airports as much as you can. and try for as much night as possible. those have been the hardest goals for me to reach. 61&141 both have their pros and cons.
A school which gets a lot of "actual" days is a plus. AZ will probably give you the best weather, but not the most personal experience to gain confidence with instruments. Use that double I.
Recently I have started to think about getting a multi and an MEI. Most schools where im at won't let me teach out with their twins. They all want 100 multi or 25 or so hours in type. Which is fine, but...where are you going to come up with 100 multi or 25 multi in type. Not every school has the same multi trainer. Someone else might be able to shed some light on which schools might let you teach in a twin with low time.
Hopefully that gives you something to plan for.

$400-$500/wk, not going to happen. Don't know who told you it's possible, but not happening right now. Regional guys don't make that much starting out. At my peak, I brought in $1100 in two weeks, I was the only CFI(other quit) at a small school with 4 airplanes, I was at the airport 14-16hrs a day. I was paid hourly, and within 3 months, that winter I had 3 paychecks(bi-weekly) that were $300-$375. Good thing I saved up! This was in an economy that is better than the current one

EWFFLYER don't totally agree..I teach at a 141 school in Florida and a bad week for me is $300. Normally, an average is $500-$600 a week. We get paid 22hr and night flights 27hr. This school has been in business for over 30 years and we are well established in the international communities.
We are certainly no Delta Academy or ATP, but a school with a good reputation and 10 planes and the best part of all is 3 full-time instructors. That allows us to have up to 4 students and it keeps us very busy.
So, the job's are there you just have to know where to look and get in a good situation and stay!
