I surprised so many people said "the one that would hire you." True you can only pick and choose so much, but what if RAH came up to a furloughed pilot and offered them a job? GoJet? Mesa?

Part of me would argue, bide your time a bit as a CFI and keep on eye on several airlines you would like to start with. Watch them, see how they hire/fire/furlough. When the time is right, strike. That may require you to wait, 2,3, or even more years. How long have there been Comair pilots on the street?

The other point I want to illustrate with my first paragraph, is how QUICKLY things can change. Each of those airlines was the APC hated-airline-of-the-year. And not just with hate-ability (and yes, hate IS a strong word, but it applies) but hiring. 2 years ago, people were getting hired as wet commercials - the socalled "250 hour wonders." If they made it through training, they may have flown 1 or 2 legs before the airlines gave them the boot. One person I know made it 2 days in class before the airlines cut them loose.

As a CFI, my job is to teach how to fly and I have to encourage some love of aviation, but spend a good hour or so on this board for a week (regional forum specifically) and you can learn mighty quickly what you are getting into.

Welcome to the jungle!:D

p.s. my point with RAH/GoJet/Mesa was just to illustrate popular opinion here at APC. No flame baiting, trolling, etc intended. No one can argue that members of those organizations are/were hated, or atleast really really disliked.

If I have the hours, which airline should I fly for. Should I go for American, Delta, Continental, etc, or go for the smaller ones like AirTran, Southwest, or Midwest. Or maybe one of the Cargo carriers like UPS, Fedex, etc. Primarily I would like to know which airline has the best benefits, best pay, best routes, most fun, and overall best standard of living?

Hey man..nothing wrong with planning out a detailed future. You just have to be prepared and open to the changes that will happen. Once you get a little deeper into your training or flying, something else might come along that interests you more than that 767 (business jets for example)..I;m just now getting into my hopefully long aviation career and there's already many things I want to try before getting into my dream jet (a 747 by the way)

So just keep working towards your long term goal, but try breaking it up into several short term goals as well along the way. Good luck on that solo coming up, and feel free to message me with any questions you have.

You have to keep in mind that your dream jet may not be at your dream job. What if you'd always wanted to fly the 727. FedEx has them for now but they are leaving. Are you going to chase the company that has them? Turn down a legacy for (just an example, I'm sure the people there are great) a job at AmeriJet?

I think it is a bit precipitous to be concerned with which major airline you'll fly for. I'd concentrate on graduating high school, college, and getting your pilot ratings and 1500+ hours so you can get on with a regional airline. Focus on your technical knowledge right now because the private, commercial, instrument ratings are the building blocks that will serve you for your entire career. Good luck!

Whatever airline will hire you

Not in Po-Dunk USA in central Wisconsin. We have only about two hot ones. Let me just say they are way out of my league.
