I agree with that statement 100%. If you say that during an interview, they won't look down on you for failing that checkride. That is what they want to hear.

Surreal, they're really not as bad as people make them out to be. I was terrified of doing spins, then came that dreaded day during my CFI training. We did an insipent spin.. wasn't to bad. Then a full blown spin, 5 turns- lost about 2500 feet in a 172. It was actually kinda fun, and some of the most valuable training I've ever recieved. When I was instructing, I tried to introduce spins to my students before they soloed. It was a hit, and every once in a while they wanted to take up a Citabria and do spins just for the heck of it. They're fun... you'll like them! :D

They dont do spins for the PPL in the States? We did them on like my third or fourth lesson. By far the most fun part of my training so far. I loved doing spins!

Yep.. not required here as of.. hmm, what year was that? It was a while back. They should reinstate them. Especially at the PPL level!

When I "first" started training during HS back in 99', I don't remember spins as part of the syllabus or not. So yeah, that doesn't help. . . lol

Either way, I'll be trying to take my CFI into at least a couple spins prior to a solo. I'd hate to slip into one turning base to final. :(

I started flying back in 1998, got my PPL in 2/1999, and we didn't have spin training required. So I assume it was pre 98... I remember someone saying it was sometime in the 80s.

The FAA found out that statistically, more CFIs & Students were getting killed doing spin training than private pilots doing inadvertent spins. So it was discontinued.

They could probably bring it back, maybe by requiring that senior (2 year) CFI's perform the training.

I agree about the spin thing. Now that I've done them I'm not only more comfortable with them, but I'm more comfortable with stalls. It's amazing to see how deathly afraid people are of stalls. There is such a misconception of those, and spins that I think people often end up putting themselves in more danger trying to avoid them. I love the stunned look on my students face as I do one for the first time in a coordinated turn. I like their reaction even more when I show them the PTS and tell them that the examiner can require them at up to a 20 degree bank.

When I first did spins for the CFI I was very nervous about them. First one wasn't really surprising. Just did what my training has taught me and it went fine. Second one was kind of fun. By the third one I was really enjoying it. I then got sick on the fourth one :)

Now I need to get some aerbatic training under my belt...

That is what is commonly done, but technically any CFI can provide the spin training currently required by CFI applicants. The CFI applicant's checkride sign-off must be done by a 2-year of course.

I was suggesting that the spin traning be re-instated for private pilots, but that only 2-year CFI's be allowed to provide that training. That might help to make the process safer than it was back in the day when the FAA cancelled it.
