Default Jeppesen books?

I'm new to this, and just about to start training. What's everyone's opinion of those big, heavy, expensive Jepp manuals (private, instrument/commercial, etc.)? Are they really worth it or are the FAA handbooks just as good?
Thanks

Jepp usually makes great stuff, but be advised that if you are career bound, you will need the FAA stuff for your CFI training...the checkride is very technical and many examiners expect you reference the official publications.

If you want to be a private pilot, Jepp or Cessna books are good.

Supplement the Jepps with the Rod Machado series... he's got a knack of explaining things in just the right way.

Otherwise, the Jepps are worth their weight in gold at the PPL and Inst/Comm level.
