ERAU MBA-Aviation

I am the corporate pilot and the marketing director for a diverse retail company. I am considering getting my MBA, mostly as wanting to fulfill my own goals, but also in case I ever need it in the future. I was wondering if anyone knows if the Embry-Riddle MBA-Aviation program is as valuable as a typical MBA. Does it cover the same bases, or is it strictly geared toward aviation (thus making it less valuable to non-aviation industry firms)?

Your special-emphasis will be Aviation-related. Therefore, several of your class credits will be aviation oriented. People who do an MBA usually specialize in a particular field such as; accounting, small-business-management, finance, etc. Showing up at a Merril Lynch interview with an ERAU-Aviation-MBA probably won't make you very marketable.

If your immediate goal is to become a financial officer with your current company, one could argue that you already have experience with the aviation aspects and would benefit more from emphasizing other areas. I would suggest a Finance degree.

This is just an opinion...

I'm starting the program this summer. I was concerned that it would be so focused on aviation that it would not help me outside the aviation world. I talked to cousins who have an MBA, and showed them the classes I have to take to complete my degree. One has never worked in the field her MBA is in, one does, and one ended up as a english teacher. Go figure.

4 of the first 6 classes are not really aviation related business classes. You then take 4 more classes that you pick out of 15. One of my cousins pointed out I can make it as aviation, business, or split between the two as I want it to be. My other cousin pointed out that lots of places want to see transcripts not so much as to see how you did as much as they want to know you really have the degree. They'll see what classes you take regardless of what the piece of paper says on the top.

Just remember, it's never a bad thing to have an advanced degree.

A MBA from riddle is a horrible waste of $50k+. Get a real MBA, not a mickey-mouse replica.

Someone I fly with frequently is doing the ERAU MBA program online. I have seen the curriculum and a few text books; absolutely absurd. As mentioned in a previous post, NO company outside of aviation is gonna give two $h|ts about your knowledge of airport operations, the airspace system, et cetera.

Future interview going something like this:
"You do understand that were are a multi-national financial institution right?. So tell me again how your advanced understanding of airport taxiways is going to make you an asset to our company."

+1 .. you barely need a GED level of intelligence to fly an airplane, why get a masters in that. How about a master's in basket weaving.. pretty much the same thing.

Not to mention that their (Worldwide MBA) is not accredited:(... The only one thats accredited is Daytona Beach! See for yourself (ACBSP : Gateway)

Save your money and attend a real institution outside of aviation.

I have the ERAU MBAA and it simply does not have the accreditation you need. The school itself is accredited, but not the program. Of course, I did it for the aviation route and because I was naive. I would go after the top and highest accredited MBA program out there. Just look at the Department of Education website and find all the school accreditations there.

Here's one list for reference. There are many rankings out there, but the top 10 usually remain the same.

Thank you for this information. I was about to start the MBA/A program in August but now I'm not so sure. I've sent an e-mail to my academic advisor to check if the online worldwide program is accredited through any other agency.

I researched ER's MBA a few years ago. It's terrible. Get a real one that is accredited from a real school.
