Well, since I live in ATL, and just signed a lease here, I'd love to stay here and go to a local school and attend college. The new GI Bill only pays for flight training via a university with a flight program. Daytona is the closest. I know a degree is a degree, but they do have a pretty impressive flight line, and with the VA picking up the tab I can do the whole program with a multi DA42 (an option, but lots of $$).

coreyk, How hard was it to get the yellow ribbon scholarship? If everything is covered maybe ill consider going to ERAU. I get out of the Military in Oct and i was planning on going to a community college that has a partnership with Delta Connection Academy... but heck if ERAU is a free ride to hell with DCA.

I graduated from ERAU Daytona Beach and I went to a major university before that. I can tell you that there is a BIG difference in education. ERAU was vastly superior in professors, class size, training, and student interest.
But ERAU is seriously lacking in social life and women and Daytona Beach is a very poor, trashy city with few attractive women. Get to know the girls at Stetson University, a private U just down the road in Deland, FL.
If it's paid for, I would recommend going to ERAU as long as you aren't craving a great social life or a lot of hot women. If it isn't paid for completely, then only go to ERAU if you're financially well-off. Also it would be helpful to get a degree in something you could use as a backup, but it's not necessary since 75% of college graduates are not employed in their field of study.

Perhaps in your case. However, not every "major university", all gazillion of them, are somehow inferior to ERAU.
Also, I believe he said he's gay, so he might rather go to college in Palm Springs, San Francisco, or Key West. I suspect he's more grown up than that, and will pursue education / career goals, with social life being second.

I had that exact same mentality when I started college, and trust me, it will not last when that's all you're focusing on. In fact, it made me downright miserable for a while, and kept me from being the best pilot I can be. If you can't do the things you enjoy doing in your spare time and just focus on airplanes and work, you WILL NOT enjoy it. It will become prison time.

GI Bill
coryk,
My father in law blew his GI bill on aviation and has always regretted it. Get a real profession and use the proceeds from it to fund your aviation training. At least that way you will have a solid back up plan.

I don't think anybody has offered up this idea yet, but if he gets his certs/ratings and an aviation degree for free, he could then go on to earn his masters in something else (MBA etc.) and that's all he will have paid for. He gets to take a shot at aviation for free and earns a masters degree for cheap as a backup plan. Not too bad of a deal IMHO.
