Interesting Aircraft Predicament
So here's the deal, I have guy who wants to learn how to fly. He weighs 285, I weigh 180. He's trying to get his license completed as cheap as possible and wants to do it in a 152. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that we would be way overweight in a 152. I told him this and then he asked me if we could do all the dual in a 172 and all of his solo time in a 152.
So what do I do? Do I just fly the 152 overweight? Do I do the majority of the dual in the 172 but still do enough in the 152 so I can sign him off for solo? Do I tell him he must do ALL of it in the 172? I'm kind puzzled here. Thanks. |

Use the C-172 or lose weight......do not use the 152 or else it is liable to use you....I'm sorry did you say if he wanted to do this as a career?
If so;Can he pass a first class medical? Might save him a bunch of money and heartache if he can't. |
LOL...thats awesome

I agree with the let him sit in a 152 for 45 minutes and see if he still wants to use it. I know it sucks to pay for a 172 instead of a 152, but safe is safe and legal is legal. Do both. |
Not worth it
Don't fly over gross. Besides It sets a bad precedence to have your student breaking the rules from day one.
Skyhigh |
Don't do it.

I'll reinterate what's already been said...172 or nothing. I know it may stink to lose a potential student and the revenue associated with it in these times but the risk of flying overweight and having something go wrong isn't worth it. Additonally, switching between planes is going to make his training longer in TT which will be more than the $20hr he saves with the 152.

How many accidents have happened because someone flew an airplane over weight?
Get into a spin and you're screwed bro. Tell him to take a ground school course at the gym. |
