CFII MEL looking to add SEL
I'm a military guy who has his ATP and CFI and CFII Multi engine certificates. What would I have to do to add my CFI single engine with the least amount of headache? Any ideas? Not the typical progression and the FARs can't spell it out as clearly as I would hope they would. Thank you!

Assuming you have neither your ASEL Commercial or ASEL Flight Instructor Certificates, you need to go through the "Additional Rating Task Table" of both the Commercial Pilot PTS (FAA-S-8081-12B) and the same thing in the Flight Instructor PTS (FAA-S-8081-6BM) and scope out all the tasks you will need to do. The tables are pretty clear. Then get with an instructor and knock out your training in a complex ASEL for the shorts and softs and maybe the Power off 180 on the Commercial, and a standard trainer (Skyhawk/ Arrow) for everything else. They changed the definition of what constitutes a complex ASEL last year, I believe the dropped the retractable part, so make sure you check that out. If that is the case all you need is a constant speed prop to make good on that.
I am not sure what was covered in your military background, but at least in the FAA world there are some maneuvers that are unique to ASEL like 8's on Pylons, Steep Spirals, Chandelles and a few others. I would think if you are fairly sharp in terms of stick and rudder skills you could knock both certs out in a few flights, but there is a good possibility that both certs could be combined into one checkride although you need to ask a DPE that question. They both share many of the same tasks and to the same performance standards even. Worst case is you can train for both at the same time then do an instant repeat on checkride day in order to check the boxes for any tasks that overlap.
