NOTAMs

Where is the proper place for a student pilot to check for NOTAMs?

Also, are there things that student pilots are not supposed to do or know about?

DUATS is a great site to go to. Otherwise... A simple call to WX-Brief is the way to go.

Check for NOTAMs on DUATS, WX BRIEF, https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/PilotWeb/, or FltPlan.com Flight Planning & Flight Tracking for General Aviation..

There are tons of things student pilots are not supposed to do. There is nothing you shouldn't know...knowledge is power in aviation. But here is a short (by no means complete) list of things you can't do as a student pilot:

1) Carry passengers
2) Fly for compensation or hire, or carry property for comp or hire
3) Accept a land and hold short (LAHSO) clearance
4) Fly in furtherance of a business
5) Fly internationally
6) Fly with less than 3 sm. visibility during the daytime, or 5 sm. visibility at night
7) Fly without visual reference to the surface
8) Fly contrary to any log book limitations or endorsements made by your instructor
9) SVFR

also NNNNNEEEEEVVVVVEEEERRRRR be afraid to ask!!!!!!!!!!!! Whether you are on the ground or in the air, if you don't know ask. It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help when doing something that can kill you.

Think of the regs as bare minimums. There is no shame in setting higher limits on yourself as far as when and where you will fly.

Also you can check AOPA among what the others said for NOTAMs. If you aren't a member you might want to look into it. I think back when I was doing my training I got 6 months free or something like that. Now BofA has my aircraft loan and they pay your AOPA dues.
