You'd think they would have all the internal CFI candidates they would ever need in this economy!

It is getting very hard to find CFI's now, even at higher pay rates than those mentioned above. I've had several brand new CFI's demand $35,000+/year, with a more experienced instructor saying he needed $60,000 or he wasn't interested. Other flight schools in the area are reporting the same thing.

I agree those salaries are not unreasonable - in fact, they should be even higher in my opinion. What I haven't figured out is how to get the market to spport that. I already get complaints (although not too many) that the $50/hour rate we charge for instruction is high because freelancers (with no overhead, insurance ((liability, worker's comp, unemployement)), business license, etc.) charge less.
I think this has been a stumbling block in the flight trainig industry for many years. I'm fully aware there is a small market that will pay very well for high quality instruction, but it is quite limited.

Where are CFIs making that much? I currently make about $7.50/hour as a CFI. I do get health insurance and guaranteed students though which is why most people are attracted to the job at that low of a pay rate. I've wanted to change jobs for a while because making minimum wage really hurts the wallet.
