Need Good Training
 

Hey guys, I need some help. I am looking for a NON UNIVERSITY flight program to finish my ratings off at(Instrument to CFI). Preferably in the West Coast. WA, OR, ID, MT, CO. I am open to anything. Looking for anything from FBO 141 programs to some old guy in a 152. I'm not opposed to University programs, just not my #1 choice.

There is a catch though, I'm a college student. So hoping to find a university that I can continue to study at.

I know it's broad, I just need leads to get me going. Figured I'd get some reply - helpful or not... :p

What do you plan on studying at University? I went to University of Colorado in Boulder and I had a blast. I also took some flight lessons at Journey´s Aviation at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport because a friend of mine was an instructor there, and the two are very close. I always thought that they were a decent school, and apparently they now have a location at the Boulder Municipal Airport. Next door to Journey´s at Rocky Mountain is McAir. I knew two guys who went there and they thought it was a decent outfit as well.

There is also a school at Boulder Municipal called Specialty Flight Training, but I have no experience or knowledge about them.

University of Colorado does not have an aviation program, but they had a flying club the last time I was there.

Also, you didn´t mention Arizona, which is in the West, but I can also recommend Sonoran Wings in Tucson, AZ. The nearby University is University of Arizona.

If I had to choose between living in Colorado or Arizona, I´d pick Colorado because I also love skiing/snowboarding, I like grass (very hard to find in Arizona), and you can actually enjoy the summer. The things I liked about living in Arizona... close to California, it was relatively warm all the way to early December, and warm again in February, and lots of taco stands...

Yea I have been looking at CO, Boulder or Metro state. Looks like a cool place.

I am actually an AZ student right now studying at a huge university in Tempe. You can probably guess the name...I am looking to transfer and CO looks like a good option. Just trying to get some feedback on flights schools in the western region.

Looking back, regarding Journey´s aviation, they had decent aircraft and the staff were very friendly. Keep in mind, this was about 5 and a half years ago, so things might be different, but might be the same. They had a couple money making tricks... first of all, they would offer a discount if you put up a credit. I chose to pay full price and pay as I went. Secondly, they had a membership fee. It was $50 per month. if you didn´t want to be a member, then you pay $15 extra per lesson. So if you fly four times per month or more, it was worth it to be a member.

Lastly, and most importantly, the instructors were contract workers. I assume this was to save the company money. So, if you plan on working up through CFI and then working at the school, keep this in mind. Otherwise, I thought the school was quite nice.

Go to Metro State in Denver, and Western Air Flight Academy or Rocky Mountain Flight School at KBJC.

You'll get a quality education, without breaking the bank.
