Boeing/Airbus Type Ratings

Hey guys I'm just curious about large jet type ratings. I'm sure it's airline to airline about whether or not you need a type rating before being hired, ex I believe Emirates will give you a type rating. But if an airline says applicants must have 737 type rating, how does one get that? Do you pay for it out of your pocket?

Domestically, as far as I know, SWA is the only airline that requires a type rating prior to starting the job (you can interview with one now, however). Internationally is a different story.

Yes, you pay out of pocket. There are several companies available, and from what I've seen the most common ones available are the 737 and 320.

From what I have known through readings on this forum and advertisements for jobs by contract agencies, a type rating is not sufficient in almost all the cases. Airlines also require 300 - 500 hrs on type.

737 and 320 seem to be the "gateway" a/c for pilots wanting to work internationally especially in Asia.
