Default Airline guys getting ATP's on their own.

I am at a stagnant regional airline and I am going to get my ATP on my own. I am wondering what the best way to go is. I have heard of guys doing this with a DPE in Presque Isle, Maine who they say in lenient. Also, I have heard of guys going to ATP Flight School or doing it together with a type rating in a sim (which is too pricey I think). I have flown nothing but a regional jet for the last few years. I am nervous about jumping into a piston multi-engine one day and taking the test the next day.

Just because they say this guy in Maine is lenient, do you really want to do that? Would you really feel like you earned it? Any idea when your upgrade time will be at your airline? If you're going to stay there, just wait till your upgrade to captain, and type in the airplane and get the ATP at the same time. Just my .02.

I don't know how much of a team player you are, but I would remove certain parts of that post...

I too am trying to decide if I should spend the money to get my ATP.. Its looking like 3,000 is going to be the cost through All ATPs or through a local flight school. With the recent stagnation at my regional I have no idea when I could get my upgrade. I don't want to be stuck with my pants down when hiring begins, but spending 3k more for training is not something I really want to do before I know how things are going to pan out at my regional.. Not to mention no piston time in the past two years.. Decisions..

I've heard a lot of good things about Trask, I'd definitely use him. I'd then go to Acadia National Park while you're in NE Maine, it's beautiful.

I've been told that if you get that ATP and then upgrade, you'll be able to do it with company check airman. If your upgrade check is same as ATP, It'll have to be with a fed. I know which I'd rather do.

It totally depends on how the airline's ADP is set up. They just be able to give the type or the type and the ATP. And even if you think you're going to get a company check airman giving the ride, it could be the day a Fed picks to observe the check airman.

Not a problem. Virtually all ATP programs will prepare the experienced pilot for a successful flight test.

I don't know. I don't have any info on the guy other than his phone number. When I was picking classes in college I would make sure to register on the first day so I could get the professor who I heard was the easiest. So, maybe. Upgrade time....about 4 more years, if I'm lucky.
